According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Raiders are waiving LB Tanner Muse, one of the team’s three third-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Muse failed to play a single regular season snap for the Raiders. He missed all of his rookie season with a foot injury. Muse looked likely to see the field in 2021 as an Otto linebacker and would have been a key special teams player.

The Raiders recent additions of veteran LBs Denzel Perryman and K.J. Wright made Muse expendable. LBs Nicholas Morrow and Javin White are currently on short-term IR, leaving Cory Littleton, Nick Kwiatkoski, and rookie Divine Deablo as the team’s other options at linebacker.

Muse fit the mold of Gruden and Mayock’s affinity towards high-character, program-type football players. He was a member of two National Championship teams at Clemson and was named First Team All-ACC in 2019.

Muse will likely be attractive to other teams as he sits on the waiver wire. His versatility earned himself a roster spot and a role in Gus Bradley’s defense, and was only pushed down the depth chart by the acquisition of two accomplished veterans. Seeing as Muse can play both safety and linebacker, NFL defensive coordinators should jump at the opportunity to add him if their units need reinforcing.

If Muse clears waivers, the Raiders will likely sign him to the practice squad.
