Raiders TE Darren Waller has been nominated as the team’s representative for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Each year, all 32 NFL teams nominate a player for the award. The award is presented to an NFL player for excellence both on and off the field. Community service, foundations, and community participation are some of the things that factor into this nomination.
Darren Waller has received this nomination on behalf of the Las Vegas Raiders for his life-changing work off the field. The Raiders’ tight end started the Waller Foundation in 2020 to help youth struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol. His foundation ensures that struggling youth and their families have the necessary support and guidance during their treatment and recovery.
On top of his foundation, Waller also spends a considerable amount of time doing other community service work. Waller was recently awarded the Tyler Robinson Foundation Inspiration Award in Las Vegas. This award was given during a community fundraiser in Las Vegas to help families and children working to overcome pediatric cancer.
In addition, Waller organized a youth football camp for children in grades three through eight during the offseason. Waller’s camp had over 100 attendees from communities around Las Vegas. During this camp, Waller was able to share his journey of overcoming addiction and achieving extreme success in the NFL.
Waller has received countless more awards during his time in the NFL and has changed the lives of hundreds. His continuous effort to support those in need does not go unnoticed by the Las Vegas community or the NFL. Waller will wear a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nomination decal on his helmet for the remainder of the season to highlight his tremendous efforts both on and off the field.
The Walter Payton Man of the Year winner will be announced during the NFL Honors before the Super Bowl. Raiders fans are encouraged to participate in Nationwide’s Charity Challenge leading up to the WPMOY announcement. Fans are able to vote on Twitter using the hashtag #WPMOYChallenge and “Waller.” Each tweet using this combination between December 7, 2021, and January 7, 2022, will be counted. The nominee whose hashtag is used the most will receive a $25,000 donation to the charity of their choice.
